How the Austrian digital vignette works

How does the Austrian digital vignette work?

The digital vignette is a record in Austria's toll system linked to your licence plate. There is no sticker: enforcement cameras read your plate and check it against the register, so nothing is posted to you and nothing needs to be displayed.

Your licence plate is the vignette

Because the plate is the only identifier, an error in it means the vignette is registered to a different vehicle — or to no vehicle at all. You would be driving unprotected while believing you had paid.

This is why we ask you to confirm your plate explicitly before payment, and why we show you the exact characters we will register.

Nothing to collect, nothing to display

Once the vignette is registered there is no document to print and no sticker to attach. Keep your confirmation reference in case you need to demonstrate the purchase.

What a vignette does not cover

The vignette covers Austria's general motorway and expressway network. Several routes are excluded and carry a separate section toll (Streckenmaut) — the Brenner motorway and a number of alpine tunnels and passes among them. These are paid separately at the route itself.
