Do rental cars need an Austrian vignette?
Does my rental car need an Austrian vignette?
Yes — the vehicle needs a valid vignette to use Austrian motorways, but you should check before buying one. Cars hired inside Austria very often already have one included. Cars hired in a neighbouring country usually do not.
Check before you buy
Because the Austrian vignette is digital and tied to the licence plate, there is nothing on the windscreen to look at. Ask the rental company directly whether a valid vignette is registered to the plate, and for which period.
Buying a second vignette for a vehicle that already has one is a waste of money — it does not extend or upgrade the existing one.
If the rental car has no vignette
You can buy one for the vehicle yourself. The vignette is linked to the licence plate rather than to the driver, so you do not need to own the vehicle to buy a vignette for it.
Match the vignette duration to your rental period, and enter the plate exactly as it appears on the car — not as it appears on the rental agreement, which is sometimes formatted differently.
Returning the car
The vignette stays attached to the licence plate, not to you. When you return the vehicle, any remaining validity stays with the car. There is nothing to remove or transfer.
