What this vignette covers
Because Switzerland has no short-stay option, the annual vignette is the only legal way to use a Swiss motorway. It runs from 1 December of the preceding year to 31 January of the following year, so buying early gives you fourteen months of use. If you are only crossing Switzerland once, it is worth checking whether a non-motorway route suits you better.
The vignette covers the motorway network. Some Alpine tunnels — the Great St Bernard among them — charge separately, and car-carrying rail shuttles such as the Furka and Lötschberg are always paid at the terminal.
